A patriot loves the United States of America, and holds its Constitution and people close to his/her heart. A patriot stands up to protect the language, borders and culture of this country so that it can remain strong. A patriot obeys the laws, and is an active participant in the governmental process, and helps the country correct itself when it strays.
Governments are people. People make mistakes. A patriot will tell his representative leaders when he think they are making mistakes. He will use the power of his vote to change the government. And he will pick up arms when outsiders attempt to invade or destroy the country he loves.

Patriotic is commonly used as a "power" or political tool. You fly your flag and vote republican, you must be a good guy. You vote Democrat and question politcians, you must be un-patriotic. I don't agree with that assumption and feel the politcial groups that have concocted these theories have succeded in a lot of places. I beleive we were fouded on a democratic socital basis. Which means always questions those you elect, and constantly wonder what is right and what is wrong. Sitting back and beleiving everything someone says isn't patriotic, that's simply communist. Having an opinion, wanting to know how your country is run, and always being thankful for the liberties we have, is more patriotic than anything.

First off, you are patriotic toward your country, not your government. A person in China, for example, who tries to undermine the communist regime can still be patriotic toward China. In this country, you can love America but not agree with the incument politicians. That doesn't make you unpatriotic, just sane. What you DO have to obey are the laws of your country. Those laws may be unjust (like "separate but equal education" for blacks before the civil rights movement or slavery or not giving women the vote), but you have to try to change those laws through the system. It's not easy, but it can be done -- at least in this country.

I " Obey" my own GODS laws, We Obey the law of the land, local, State and federal. We do not obey Government. When the Constitution was written freedom was the goal. We wanted to be free from the Tyranny of the king who wanted us to obey without question.
Many died for that cause, to obey Government would be the same as spitting on the graves of those who died to protect our freedom and our Constitution. Many in our great country have forgoten that Government is the peoples servant, it's not the other way around. We are not Governments servant.

A system like this that is working right now is able to be done for every state and by the Feds. There is NO reason why every other state with many more commodities and in larger quantiites can't do even better. The Feds with all the resources at thier disposal should do 50 times better than Alaska!

Patriots in a representative democratic society obey the rules--even those they disagree with (and do their best to understand the morass of regulation and law which is ours today). At the same time they seek the maximum freedom consistent with an orderly, democratic society, and seek it through the democratic process. They express dissatisfaction, sometimes publically, with class and let the force of truth be their loudest voice; and they express it at the ballot box in every election. They tell the truth to themselves and others. They do all of this out of love of country, love of fellow man, and out of their own self-interest. They would die for their country, even if they thought a particular action was wrong, because they know its ideals are right, in the recognition that their decendents will one day recognize the "pride that must be [theirs] alone to have laid so heavy sacrifice at the alter of freedom."

A true patriot ALWAYS questions his government. Sometimes he even has to risk going to prison for standing up to government. A perfect example are the millions of brave Americans who had to suffer persecution, invasions of privacy and even prison time for standing up against the war in Viet Nam. Of course there are those phoney flag wavers that will say that what I said is ridiculous, but they of course are the real cowards in this life.
A real partiot spends a good many of his days and nights wondering how to care for America.

You don't obey the government. That would be living under a dictatorship. You obey the laws of your country, state city, etc.
You try to elect the right candidate, who will represent the people. Unfortunately, somehow, big business has managed to hijack the electoral process, and they get the candidates in office who will benifit them. Also, many politicians are easily attracted to big stacks of cash and perks.

A true patriot does what is best for his country. We have to question our government; even the Constitution has Amendments.

A patriotic American is one who loves his/her country and fully supports those who are willing to die for it(aka-our soldiers). Doesn't have anything to do with following which government is in power.
