I just wanted to know how the place is. Is it a good place forthe family to go and is it a good place to be stationed. Is there anything I should be aware of and stay away from.

I was stationed at FT Hood from 2001 to 2003. It's not a bad place, and there are lots of familey things to do there. Including 2 local lakes, paintballing, shopping centers, and it is only an hours drive from Austin and about two and half hours from San Antonio. So lots of site seeing to do as well.

Check with USO and MWR and other organizations for things like cheap tickets to 6 Flags Over Texas, Fiesta Texas, Sea World, etc.

One thing you should know is that FT Hood does alot of training, so expect field time, expect time at NTC ( National Training Center ), and expect that at some point in time you will deploy.

There are some places you should be careful at outside the east gate of post, there are some stores that have been robbed there, and people robbed at night at atm machines near there.

For the most part it is a great community.

Enjoy.

My husband was stationed there from 97-01 and it was a great time for us,I don't know how much it has changed but when I was there I attended Central Texas College, we lived on campus (married student housing), there were great restaurants all around, there is a big lake near by the base you can go swimming, they had paddle boats, water slides, cottages you can rent, it's all probably better now, we went to see the Alamo, San Antonio the river walk, we went to the Waco zoo, there are many things to do just go to the MWR and get some info, we had a great time there, hope all goes well for you and your family.

I live near it and it's a pretty good place and fairly family oriented. You have the usual problems but no more so than any other place. There are plenty of places to go and things to do. Traffic can be bad at times, during rush hour especially. Costs are reasonable and rent is about average or a bit below. Not a bad place to live overall.
