A car is a must in the LA area. The area is too spread out to walk, and the bus system is very poor. I would also not recommend staying in the downtown or LA proper. Check tripadvisor.com for suggested good hotels.

Skip Los Angeles... come south to The Orange County area and see Disneyland and the surfers in Huntington Beach!! (laugh).

If you have to stay in LA, there's Universal Studios, and you can even try being in the audience in a TV or Game show by checking "audiences unlimited"..

If you are daring, try getting tickets for the Tonight Show or the Jimmy Kimmel show. You got to get there early but its fun and worth the time.

The Chinese Theater in Hollywood Blvd has the famous hand prints, and if you're in town for a movie premiere, check out the celebrities walking down the red carpet.

LA has historical places to visit and ethnic places like China town and Olvera (little Mexico) Street. You can also go and see the expensive shops on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills or the famous Farmer's Market near the CBS studios.

LA has also the Dodgers baseball team and in Orange County the Angels. Check their schedule for baseball games.

If you like Comedy you can check out one of the many comedy clubs on the Sunset Strip, check out the Hustler store, and if you are near the Flynt Publications building, sometimes you can see Larry Flynt's limo (you really can't miss the naked woman painted on the limo!).

There's some of the "must see" that I would suggest to someone visiting.

I'd definitely say its best to rent a car. There are some good tourist-centric suggestions here already.

I'd recommend the Getty Center (if its a clear day--great view). A drive up to Malibu on Pacific Coast Hwy (or all the way up to Santa Barbara for some wine tasting, if you have a time) is a great way to enjoy So Cal.

Venice Beach is fun (although pretty touristy too). I'd say the footprints in front of the Mann Chinese Theater are worth seeing, although that entire area (Hollywood Blvd and the Hollywood & Highland mall) is pretty much one big tourist trap. Some window shopping in the Rodeo Drive area can be fun as well.

I hope this helps!

haven't you ever heard the song "walking in la?"- no body walks in la. you need a car. visit hollywood blvd, stop at the hollywood and highland complex for cheap parking and easy walking to the chinese theater and the kodak theater (where the oscars are held). also, it's a bit cheesy, but i like it, go to beverly hills and buy a map to the star's home from some freak on a corner. drive around and look at homes you'll never be able to afford. visit disneyland and universal studios. enjoy!

Contrary to popular belief, it is possible to get around without a car. The Metro gold, red, blue, and green lines will get you anywhere from Pasadena to the beach to LAX to the middle of Los Angeles for around $3 a day. And buses can get you around from there. BUT, if you want to go anywhere else, a car would definitely help! Here are links to the Metro page and some other interesting LA sites.
