I recently got into an accident where I totaled my vehicle. My insurance payed for what the vehicle is only worth but there is still some money I owe to the bank (lean holder) which GAP insurance covers. But will they still cover it, if I get a DUI? My regular auto insurance did.

Gap will pay the difference. Don't worry. Contact them and the bank immediately and it should resolve itself. Make sure the bank knows it's getting the balance from Gap so they don't start trying to collect it from you and/or showing your account late on your credit.

Read the policy carefully. Some of the GAP insurance policies will not cover under certain circumstances. Some will not cover if you are convicted or (for example) making arrangements to have your vehicle burned or stolen to get out from under the payments. Some also have a rider that won't cover unless you lost the vehicle through no fault of yours, and did not break any laws leading to the loss. If you are convicted of racing which led to the loss, or convicted of DWI which led to the loss, it may not pay. Again, find the policy and read it carefully.

Check with the business manager who signed you at the dealership. Some GAP companies will not pay if the vehicle was a total loss as the result of a felony or other crimes. DUI is a crime. However, some companies like Stonebridge Casualty, will pay off even if a crime was committed at the time of the loss.

Better read the policy carefully. Although your auto insurance will normally cover you even if you are DUI, many specialized insurance policies will NOT cover you if you are DUI. Typical exclusions include participating in a felony, racing or other contests, operating while impaired by drugs either prescribed or not, etc.
