The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit. John 3: 8 (NIV)
How would you personally interpret this verse? I have my own thoughts, but I would like to read some of yours.

wow-
I've received more input than I figured I would. I'm pleasantly impressed. Thanks to everyone who've shared their thoughts.
Don't you love it when you can brain-storm, and share how God is working with other Christians??!
God Bless.
(and yes, all those punctuation marks were nessesary.) :)

There are a couple of significant things to learn from that verse. One of them has to do with how people jump to conclusions about conditions that have to be met to be born again by taking selected passages from the book of Acts or the epistles and claiming that someone has to be baptized or speak in tongues or have hands laid upon them by a believer, etc, before they can receive the Holy Spirit.
This passage outlines the fact that God chooses whom He will give new life to and He isn't limited in that choice by doctrines men construct from His written word. But as Jesus said...
"No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day. It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me. John 6:44-45

To me, it means you can feel the spirit of the Lord, but you cannot see it. When GOD tells you to do something, you might not understand why He tells you to do something at that time. For example, something may seem like the correct path, but GOD may want you to go in a different direction.

Everyone's spirit comes and goes without a physical awareness by any person. Just like the wind, you cant actually see someone's spirit leave or enter their body, but it is there none the less.

Jesus was talking to Nicodemus, the head of the San Hednron. He came to Jesus and asked what it was meant to be born again. When he ask if you can go back to your mother's womb a 2nd time, Jesus gave the answer in your question To me it means that you hear God speaking to you and yet you are not sure where it's coming from. it takes faith to believe in something you cannot see.

My thought is that one who wants to go with the flow of the Holy Spirit its like the wind. We dont know the direction God wants to take us in our lives. We dont know exactly what He has planned for us and God wants us to tune into what He is saying, doing, showing to us. Sometimes He wants to show us how we can make that decision or encourage us to make a decision. In my experience I thought I was going this way but He led me another way because I asked Him for His guidance. Its scary-fun and spontaneous almost lol I was happy with my decision after all.

Jesus was talking to a man (Nicodemus) who had not yet made a deicision to believe in and follow him. But he was a deeply religious man who knew God existed and had seen evidence of Jesus miracles. So Jesus told him "You have hear the sound of the wind (God moving) - but you (Nicodemus) do not yet know where it is from and where it is going. But those who are born of the Spirit (through believing in and following Jesus) do know where it is from and where it is going. So it is with them - they know.

To me it just Say's God is in charge! God decides when and where we will go. It also brings me back to thinking the very definition of faith.
Faith is the belief in something without substance , with out proof but that you know in your heart it is real and true.

When one walks a spiritual path of love and truth, one awaits the manifestation of Gods will, and then obeys it to the best of ones ability. It is impossible to make concrete plans without knowing Gods long range will. This is why when a Christian makes planes, he says, If it is Gods will we will do this, or that.
