Being fried in butter.
Our family adds lots of sugar in them as well, and that makes it crunchy too. We do not add syrup on them like Americans do.
The actual french name is "pain doré" which mans"golden bread". This bread is NOT toasted. It's just slices of bread dipped in a sweet egg preparation (eggs, milk, salt, sugar, sometimes melted butter or cinnamon) and fried in the pan, or baked in the oven. The soft ones you get in restaurants are baked, that why they are soft (and not as good as fried in butter).
