Amonia free dyes do not damage the hair because the amonia is what swells the cuticle in the coloring process. An amonia free dye is basically just coating the outside of the hair shaft (may penetrate a little depending on the porosity of your hair) making it a temporary dye. BE AWARE THOUGH... if a dye claims it is "amonia free", make sure it doesnt have any other "amonia derivitives" in it otherwise, it is still penetrating the hair shaft by making the cuticle swell, making it a semi-permanant dye rather than a temporary.

I dont know anything about hair dye, but maybe because it doesnt have ammonia? Just a guess.
