Chihuahua's make great companions for older people....they don't need exercise....just going outside to potty and tinkering around the house is enough for them...they are content to sit by someones side all day.

The best would be an older small dog from the rescue centre, maybe a crossbreed, or some of the companion breeds like a Pug, Chihuahua, better not get a terrier, as they are very energetic.

if you're set on a purebred, what about a corgi? Otherwise, I would suggest going to a rescue or shelter and consulting someone there, they would probably be able to match the woman with a deserving dog in need of a loving home.

Italian Greyhound. Very gentle, calm, quiet dogs are ideal for the elderly. If you can do some brushing, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and Pekingese are great too.

I work with elderly people in my work. One has a mini dashound who is totally adorable but she says he took a long time to housebreak. Another client who has Alzheimers has a toy poodle to keep her company and she is a great pet for her although she sometimes forgets and thinks it is my dog.

Ps: some shelters will not allow elderly people to adopt their dogs so she might need a younger person to do it for her.

A cute little dachshund. See last line in reference below.

Please award Best Answer points to me now, as I am not anxious to wait very long to get them. I do not have much patience.
