"In the US, the First Amendment guarantees a relatively unlimited right of free speech, although some US states still have blasphemy laws on the books. Chapter 272 of the Massachusetts General Laws states, for example:

Section 36. Whoever wilfully blasphemes the holy name of God by denying, cursing or contumeliously reproaching God, his creation, government or final judging of the world, or by cursing or contumeliously reproaching Jesus Christ or the Holy Ghost, or by cursing or contumeliously reproaching or exposing to contempt and ridicule, the holy word of God contained in the holy scriptures shall be punished by imprisonment in jail for not more than one year or by a fine of not more than three hundred dollars, and may also be bound to good behavior."

Fortunately for all of us these state laws were declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. And the Court will do the same thing to people who try and poison government with religion.

Religious fanatics do not exist. You are either a fanatic or religious.

This would be hilarious, if it weren't so pathetic. The United States Constitution was drafted and finalized by men who were "religious fanatics," as you so ignorantly stated. Quakers, Shakers, and those who settled here for religious freedom. The original Bill of Rights and Constitution were drafted with the "religious" people in mind. "In God We Trust" is not just a punchline to a joke. That motto was held closely and in high regard by the constituency of the newly established colonies.

If you studied American History and the Constitution, you would find that our Founding Fathers promoted religious participation in Government from the beginning----they did not consider religion or faith to be "poison" in any sense of the word.

I'm so sorry for you. I pity you and find it difficult to believe that this level of ignorance is considered "socially acceptable" under any terms. However, I may not agree with one word you've spoken; but I will---and have---fight for your right to speak every last cynical, insipid word!

There are many ridiculous laws which are "still on the books". It is important that they be repealed. Having obviously ridiculous laws (which may never be enforced) fosters disrespect for all laws. I am not suggesting that we drop everything to repeal these laws. However, many state legislatures have law revision panels. It would not take much time for them to bring such laws to the attention of the legislature for repeal. I would like to think that the relevant panel of the Massachusetts legislature would like to hear from you. I suspect that if they act on this one, there would be some religious fanatics who would oppose such a repeal.

That's great! God is still regarded in the law. I thought they tried to get rid of Him all together.

Isn't it something that if you attack a person race, it is a vioation of their civil rights. If you attack their sexual orientation, it is a "hate crime". If you attack their gender, it is "sexual discrimination". But if you attack their religious beliefs, its a good thing and protecting their rights to be free from slander and abuse is a crime. Something doesn't seem right about that....

As long as they're not being enforced, who cares? They have laws about spitting in the street too. They're obsolete.
