There's no doubt in my mind that Atkins (low-carb diets) in general work. I've seen people lose tremendous amounts of weight using them.
However, there are some problems. Here is what I've seen:
1) They are not maintainable. Inevitably, people come off the low-carb diet after they've lost the weight and they put it back on. I don't think low-carb diets are practically for a lifetime of living.
2) Generally, people get cranky, have bad breath, are constipated and get gout. They are also, in general, lethargic (no carbs = no energy)
3) They don't teach people how to live a health lifestyle. Hence, the weight gain after quitting Atkins.
I usually recommend to people that they use a fitness routine and consume an adequate amount of calories. If you are obese to the point where fitness isn't an option, Atkins can get you half way there, but you are going to have to make the effort to live a healthy lifestyle.
Use a website such as www.fitday.com to monitor your activities and food intake. In addition, you may want to consider weight watchers. My friends have had good luck with it and have had success for the long term.
Good luck.

The problem with this diet is that you need Carbohydrates like it or not. in fact, 60 percent of your intake of calories should be Carbs, 30 percent fat, and 10 percent protein.
Your body needs carbohydrates to function, and carbohydrates are really nothing but sugars. Most of your cells can use different kinds of sugars (fructose, sucrose), but your brain and central nervous system can only use glucose. Glucose is a constitutional isomer of the simplest sugar C6H12O6. Now, normally you get this sugar from your carbs. If you are eating more complex sugars (disaccharides, polysaccharides) your body will break them down into glucose, and the brain can use it.
When youre on the Atkins, your body isn't getting the sugar it needs to maintain basic brain and nervous system functions. When this happens, your body goes to your muscles and breaks down the proteins to get to the carbon atoms of the amino acids to make glucose. Not only is this very inefficient, but your body makes by-products called ketones (C=O) which are toxic to the body... inducing a state called ketosis. (it's kind of like exhaust coming from a car that doesnt burn fuel efficiently.) The ketones are in fact what causes the bad breath that is associated with followers of the Atkins diet.
It's hard on the body, and you can do permanent damage to your system. Please don't try the Atkins diet.

It's horrible for you. Maybe not for short times, but you don't get balanced nutrition at all.
All the fat and cholestoral in Atkins leads to heart disease, the misbalance of protein to everything else does a NUMBER on your liver, it can really damage it, and you can be seriously malnourished from it.
Honestly, go with something like weight watchers, or something that allows you to eat healthily. I don't care if it's not as fast, it's better for you and it helps you KEEP OFF THE WEIGHT.
Atkins is a quick fix that doesn't last. I would not reccomend it at all in the slightest. Trust me you want that liver more than you want to lose ten pounds.

It is bad, bad, bad. Any diet that is extreme is bad, bad, bad.
There are much more healthier, and easier ways to lose, and keep off for life. But if you are determined to do a diet, do "The Mediterranean Diet." I recently was at a presentation of a couple of world renown doctors of Cardiology & Endocrinology. Years and years of research and practice, and they found this to be the healthiest, life lasting way to eat, and it's least expensive book about diets you'll find. Authors are Marissa Cloutier, MS, RD and Eve Adamson.

Unless you have kidney problems it won't hurt you.
My doctor was amazed at my triglycerides and cholesterol. I was able to quit taking cholesterol lowering drugs because mine dropped so much on the diet. Your body switched from sugar burning to fat burning. The quickest source of fat is in the bloodstream so it drops your cholesterol then it goes to your reserve body fat and you lose pounds.
I lost 43 pounds and have kept it off for five years now. My wife lost 21 pounds and has kept it off.

It looks like everyone has their own drum to beat! All I can say is that those who try it swear by it and there are no problems. Obviously there is something to it. Worth a 6 month shot I'd say...
