My ex gf of 5 years has a birthday coming up, i do not have any false hope of getting back together, however before we were together we were close friends and i would like to still be friends. is it possible to remain friends? will getting her a present send the wrong signal? will not getting her a present make me look like an ******?

If you're invited to a party and this is a common practice, sure what's one more gift.
If not, forget it. The gift is not the deciding factor in whether you remain friends. Conversation is.

You sound like a really nice guy!! I am sure she thinks so too. Get her a birthday present. If you are worried about sending wrong signals then make sure the gift is not so personable!!!!

If she has a new bf I wouldn't send a gift. If she doesn't you can send her something small (under $30) so she doesn't think you're trying to "buy" her back. If she does have a new man just leave her alone or if you really have to send her something send a card, but don't write anything that could be interpreted the wrong way.

Get her a small token gift. Nothing too personal like lingerie or she may get the wrong impression. It is possible to remain friends depending on the reason for the break-up.

get her someting more personla nothing expensive, a small card just wishing her a happy birthday and u hope to remain the good friends that u guys were before u got romantically involve

i think you should get her something. but obviously not something to extravagant (sp). this will let her know that you still care for her.. maybe you should include a card too..with some of your feelings, letting her know that you would like to be friends. (i dunno if you have already talked to her about this). and being friends is still possible...you just both need to get past whatever went wrong in your relationship and look toward the future. best of luck to you two.
