Being an American is different to different people, however there are some things that true Americans all have in common:
We love our country above all others
We respect our leaders, even Bush, although we might not like them
We hold our flag dear to our hearts
We support our military TROOPS although not necessarily what they do or where they are sent
We will fight for our freedoms: choice, religion, speech, to bear arms, etc.
We want a safe and decent home for our children to grow up in
We strive to make our country a better place to live
We want our land to stay clean
We want to be able to converse with each other in a unified language (English)

Being American may mean different things to others like freedom to love who they want to regardless of gender or race, freedom to speak their own language with their families and friends, to wear the clothing of their homelands, to have the right to keep their cultures and to teach their children of their cultures. The USA is a diverse cultural country, that is what makes us American. It is not only white, black, olive, OR brown. It is white, black, olive, AND brown. Embrace the beauty of them all.

There is no one thing that characterizes us as Americans. We're all free to be as different from the next guy as we want.

The one unifying thing is that we are a nation of laws. Although we all break laws during our lifetime, we generally accept that there are consequences for the breaking of laws no matter how small they may be. Once, my husband was jaywalking to get to the Municipal building of the city of Glendale, CA because he wanted to pay a moving violation or parking ticket...can't remeber for sure...anyway, he got a jaywalking ticket. He was TICKED OFF, but he payed it. What are you going to do? If you do the crime, you do the time (or pay the fine, as the case may be.)

And that is what it is to be an American. Some are lazy, some are hard working, some are fat, some are thing, some are religious zealots others are atheists...but we all follow the rules (or pay the dues when we are caught.) We are unified under our government (sometimes the unification comes from distrust or dislike of our government.) and we are unified under the Constitution.

Theres no rules or principles. If you believe in your heart that this is the greatest nation on earth, and you believe in things like freedom to live your life as you choose, and your willing to work hard, and abide by the law, then your an American.

A true American is patriotic, does not put down our leaders due to their political beliefs, loves and supports the military and loves his wife, his kids, his country and God for making it all possible to be able to enjoy the freedom with have here in this country.

To respect and not abuse this land and all that it has to offer.
To not take for granted the things we have.
To stand up for your rights and be known equal among others.
To know exactly what the troops do in the war and why they do it....for our freedom(regardless of dumb reasons).
To always up hold the law of the land.
To respect lady liberty and to have the doors of freedom always open to the people who would love it as we do.

An American is MANY things. We are a people of many cultures, who LOVE and have loyalty for, but ONE country!! We pledge our allegiance to this country!! Although it is ok for people who have immigrated from other countrys to keep their own heritage, customs and flags,we RESPECT the U.S.flag in THIS country, and NEVER,NEVER,NEVER would we show disrespect, and dishonor by flying the U.S. flag UPSIDE down,or BENEATH a foreign flag!! People have FOUGHT and DIED for the privelege to live here, and for the FREEDOM our flag represents!!!!!
