A picnic basket! I bought a nice one for a friend of mine at a kitchen specialty store in an outlet mall. It came with plates, cloth napkins and utensils. Or you can always go with a very nice silver plated picture frame. I got 3 of those on my wedding day. Not too expensive, but well appreciated.

Unless it's a hefty gift card (like $100), I don't like those for wedding gifts as it doesn't really show any thought or creativity. Get something off their registry - it's there for a reason. I also think that wedding gifts should be about starting their life together, not stuff for the baby (that's what baby showers and birthday parties are for), unless of course that's what they registered for.
A beautiful set of picture frames might be nice; champagne glasses from Tiffany's would be thoughtful; several types of cookbooks would be helpful.

gift certificates from a store they shop at or a resteraunt they love is always nice. A night of babysitting and a night out on the town alone is nice. A stock bond or savings bond for the child shows you care about the child's future so they can help start early for the childs education. The mother shouldnt care if she aint with him no more, if she does then maybe counseling for her...lol

I agree with the dinner gift certificate idea... if you cant afford the babysitter.. then just do the gift cert... it's nice to get out of the house- with or without the baby.

Most likely they need money, stuff for the house/baby, etc.
I'd get them a gift certificate at (assuming you live in the US) Target, Cost Plus World Market, TJ Maxx, Pier One, IKEA, something like that.
