Thanks to Hollywood, the upside down cross has a bad rep. The movie Amityville Horror immortalized the upside down cross as a symbol of Satan.

In all actuality, the upside down cross is symbolic of the crucifixion of Saint Peter Prince of the Apostles. He was seized during the Nero's persecution of Christians and condemned to be crucified. He felt unworthy of being crucified in the same manner of Jesus so he requested that he be crucified upside down. Since then, the upside down cross has represented the martyrdom of Saint Peter.

The anti-Catholic crowd loves to make people think it really means Satan. But historical fact indicates otherwise. It's not common but there are some Churches, named after Saint Peter, that feature an upside down cross. There's a famous photo of Pope John Paul II participating in a prayer service at such a church. The photo fatures Pope John Paul II and an inverted cross in the back ground. Anti-Catholic love to use this picture as alleged proof that the Catholic Church is Satanic in origin.

it's an inverted cross, it represents satan. I've heard that's why hippies were looked so down upon, the peace sign is a circled upside down cross. And everything hippies stood for went against the bible.

it's just a symbol. can symbols hurt you? And how could someone say EVERYTHING hippie's believe in goes against the bible. so I guess being peaceful isn't in the bible? I guess wanting everyone to love one another isn't in the bible? Jesus himself is always pictured with long hair... but I guess that would be a baaaaad thing right? Peace symbols??? I guess that wasn't in the bible either. *slaps forehead* oh waaaait, what was that about a dove and an olive branch? The peace symbol commonly used by said hippies was a sign that originated by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament in Britain. The symbol itself is a combination of the semaphore signals for the letters "N" and "D", standing for Nuclear Disarmament. These two signals imposed over each other form the shape of the peace symbol.
