1% is hardly something to worry about. You have a 1% chance of getting pregnant using condoms or birth control and no one seems to worry about that tiny %. If I had a child with any disability I would prefer it to be downs since they are more aware and they are so loving and are more like other children compared to others with diabilities. I wouldnt terminate the pregnancy over a 1% chance. If you are that worried about it have them run some more tests. Doctors told my friend that she had about a 50% chance that her daughter would have downs but those tests aren't accurate and have a lot of false positives and her baby was just fine. I wouldnt worry about it.

I had the test when I was pregnant with my first son (I was also 19) and it came back saying that I had a high chance of child being born with down syndrome and I have a cousin who has it so I have seen what my Aunt and Uncle have gone through having to raise him. I want to first say congratulations on the pregnancy this should be a very happy time for you and getting this kind of news can be heart breaking and I'm sorry that you are having to go through this. Ask the doctor about having a test called an amniocentesis down it's were the take a long needle and while doing an ultrasound they will navigate the needle into you stomach (I know it sounds painful but it's not that bad) then they will take some of the fluid out so the can test it. It take about two weeks to find out the results and they will seem like the longest two weeks in your life but when the results come back saying that your baby is healthy it is worth the wait. They will also be able to tell you the sex of the baby and it's not just a guess. (that's if you want to know) But before you go through with the test there is a chance of miscarriage which my doctor didn't tell me until after-wards. If you are that concerned about the baby having any birth defects I would go through with it. Good luck to you and I wish you all the best during this time.

What test did you have that told you this? I had the blood test? (I think it's called something like the triple blood test or something like that.) It came back that I had a high probability of my child having Downs Syndrome. I freaked out but then I realized that I already knew that since I was 41 and the older the mother the higher the percentage. I had a amnio and that concluded there was no problem. Even, with an amnio, 1% is not high. Tell the doctor how upset you are and he'll tell you the same things.
(PS The fact that 15 year olds are having children is not the best reasoning for why you are pregnant at 19.)

My daughter was 25 and her second son was born with down syndrome. It is nothing to be afraid of. My grandson is just like other children he just does things slower. They do have there problems but so do normal children. My grandson had heart surgery at 4 months for a hole in his heart. Then he had eye surgery to tighten the muscles in his eyes and was happy as a clam right after surgery. Also he is partial deaf in one ear. He is the most happiest baby I have ever seen. And the most beautiful.
At 1% I wouldn't worry at all. If you would like to know anything else my email is xpsychonannyx@yahoo.com

when i was pregnant my doc hit me with the same thing. i was scared to death had an amnio synthesis. nothing was wrong with my baby. i have worked with children with this disorder as well as more serious conditions. down syndrome children are very loving and not as difficult as other challenged people.
if you feel that you can not handle the situation, then you know what you must do.
one thing i must tell you. at least you are thinking. alot of those i took care of, were in an institution because their families couldn't handle them anymore.
so which choice is the right one?
that i don't know. only you can make the choice. whatever one you make you must never look back.
good luck my dear............

honesty...here are some things to think about...
**19 years old is too young to have a child
**1% is a very small percentage
**the state helps with $$ for caring for down children
**19 years old is too young to have a child
**19 years old is too young to have a child
**down syndrome is a LIFETIME commitment
**down children are FULL of LOVE
**down children need LOTS of LOVE
think more about the child itself than the mental capacity of the child. alot of people can't have children. adoption is a gift.

I don't think you have anything to worry about. Down Syndrome is more prevelant in older women (nearing 40). And even though children with Down Syndrome require lots of time and love, they are worth it.
