Oddly enough, I have a cat who loves water. He is 1 yr old, american short hair and jumps into the shower the second he hears the water running. He plays with the water and brings his toys into the shower as well. My other cat is petrified of water and will only drink it. I don't know why he is so scared and the other isn't.

They really aren't affraid of water. People think because they lick themselves clean they dont need baths. If you try later when the cat is grown they will hate the water. They will be to old to teach them that the water is OK. If you get a kitten wash them right away and wet them down once a week and wash once a month. They will love it or tolerate it. In any case your cat will be much cleaner than him licking himself. Less hair balls too if you clean and comb them. My kitten loves the water. Cats can be smelly because they are always in the cat litter. YUK !

Not all cats are terrified of water. I have a cat named Flipper and he just loves to play in water. If you introduce water to them as kittens, they are usually less afraid of it.

My cat loves water. I think it's an old belief that cat's are scared of water. Probably varies from one cat to another.
