Because they advocate adopting dogs and cats from local animal shelters

Petco doesn't sell dogs because all of the puppies at your local "pet stores" are from puppy mills. I use to work at a pet store and the conditions these dogs are delivered upon are horrible they will give you a speech about how they come from breeders and suppliers but these are lies. The real pet stores don't participate in this. Petsmart will have dogs on the weekends but they are all rescue and shelter dogs. This is the route you should take if you are thinking of adopting. The $70 you will spend at the shelter is a lot better than the $400 at the pet store and the $70 even goes toward your next vet visit.

Because no one should be selling puppies from a store! Go to a good breeder and get one from someone who really cares about their dogs.

DON'T go to a pet shop or buy a pup off the internet!!!! You'll pay top dollar for what is usually a poor quality puppy mill dog. And you'll be supporting one of the cruelest industries in the country. The breeding animals are kept in deplorable conditions. They probably haven't been vaccinated against contagious diseases or tested for any health or temperament problems or genetic diseases - that costs money and cuts into their profits. A female is often bred every time she comes into heat. When her poor little body can't take it any more, she is often clubbed in the head and tossed into a dumpster or an open ditch. Most puppy mills ship their pups to pet stores at wholesale prices and many pups die before they even get there. These "breeders" have figured out that they can use the internet to ship a dog directly to the customer and thus make more money by cutting out the middleman. If you buy a dog from out of state, good luck getting your money back if there's something wrong with the pup. These people count on you becoming instantly attached to the poor little guy and being willing to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars at the vet to treat whatever is wrong with him.

Find a good breeder by going to www.akc.org or talking to people at dog shows. You can also find info about the breed clubs on the akc site - they probably have a rescue group where you can get an older dog for less money.

Any pet store that sells dogs and cats is a bad pet store. The dogs come from puppy farms which are rather cruel, and tend to sell unhealthy dogs. (Conditions in such places are apalling. Inbreeding, and the breeding of animals with genetic problems are common.) With Petco and Petsmart you can argue if they did it to look good, or because they love pets. (Most likely a bit of both.) Petco makes their money selling you pet supplies, and knows that they'd lose money selling you dogs in a humane fashion.

Ask one of the Petco employees about getting a dog. They will be happy to help. Often they have dogs available for adoption on weekends. Or representatives from various shelter and rescue group will be on site.

Many pet stores are realizing that too many animals are being put to death so they have stopped selling Cats and Dogs. Now if they'd only stop selling Rodents, Reptiles and Birds and encourage people to adopt these from Rescue Groups and Animal Shelters.

Petco says this on their website
"PETCO, the PETCO Foundation and Petfinder.com have teamed up with adoption agencies, rescue groups and humane societies across the country to create thousands of adoption opportunities. Petco encourages the purchase of animals only when all adoption options have failed. "

Because they are smart. No pet store should sell puppies. They try to help out with the pet over population by advocating adoption. They will have adoption events on Saturdays at most Petco's.

I read about why lots of pet stores don't sell animals and that's because they care about the purpose of a born puppy and they don't want to breed them in mills because they want money. It's because they want it to be born naturally from a mother and father dog who love each other, not two dogs born the same breed whom are forced to have puppy(s). The bottom line is, because PETCO is smart.

They won't get their pups from puppy mills. That is good news for you. Puppy mills just keep a dog in a crate day in and day out. They are bred every heat and not given the best of food or care. They are not given love and attention. Is that the puppy you would want?
They do have rescue groups in on the weekends and you can go look at them.

because they don't want to support the breeding and selling of poor quality unhealthy so called 'pure-bred' dogs that generally come from puppy mills and get sold at other pet stores. They want to promote the adoption of animals from shelters.
