I would be willing to bet if you got him a toilet paper box with a door and windows cut into it he'd be the happiest kid on the block. A special rug for inside would be nice too.
Maybe even a flashlight from your local Dollar Store.

My kids are all grown, but my grandkids love our boxes. I've got three toilet paper boxes put together so they each have their own room.

If you must spend money on something, but like the idea of a fort.
Go to Collections.com They have some really cool kids tents.
One is a teepee and one is a castle. The last time I looked, they were $14.99 each plus shipping.

Have a wonderful time at his party. Just remember, he'll love what ever you get him.

Give him a Gift Card for McDonald's and take him there after his party . After he eats let him play in the playarea as long as he wants.
Or Give him a Thomas the Tank Engine Train and start the collection now, and for each birthday, easter, Christmas add one more train to the collection.

My nephew just turned three and he loves Thomas the train. One small train individually is around that price range. He also has many matchbox cars. The wiggles and other character/cartoon figures are easy to find and good choices typically. Lastly, you can almost never go wrong with a Disney DVD. They are collector's items and kids normally watch lots of them.

Go to any drug store or department store. Pick out a car or truck or helicopter. It will probably cost only $5 or so.

Goto Walmart, you can find an age appropriate toy from all three of his favorites if you go there. Look in the toddler section, we don't want junior to get a small peice in his mouth and choke.

actually a big colorful ball is a great idea..... he is at a good age to learn to "roll" the ball , and he has the energy to chase it all over the house, the yard, etc.....

cars and trucks are cool, but for a two year old they have to be bigger.... but you can actually probably get both..... go to walmart.... they have really good prices... a ball runs around 3.00 and a bigger car or truck runs 10.00 and up usually....

Whatever you do, please remember to be nice to the parents. In other words, don't get him a toy that makes a lot of noise, is hard to clean up, or is bulky. As a parent of a 2 year old, I sure don't appreciate some of those totally obnoxious toys given to him by his grandma...
