When I was nine years old, I snapped out of a deep sleep and whispered, "Grandma's dead." I said it to myself in the dark. About a minute later, the phone rang and all of a sudden, I heard my father crying. I crawled out of bed and pushed open my parents bedroom door and asked my mom if everything was okay. Of course, she lied and told me to go back to bed. The next morning, my parents told me and my younger brother that she had passed on. It was scary to know before I was told and I haven't viewed death the same way since then. I'm twenty five now.

When I was about 10 years old, our little terrier dog was killed in an accident. My mom was hanging out clothes in the backyard, and as she bent down to get another item from the laundry basket, she saw him standing there next to her wagging his tail, but half of his head was missing. He had actually been killed and buried in a field several hours before that, but none of us knew it at the time. I can still remember how shook up she was when I got from school that day.
