Believe in God because it has made its prescense known in your life. Don't believe in God because of a book, a book is so open to being flawed you don't even wanna get me started. If the book said God made man out of clay and you think what happens if science gets the missing link, you'll be dissappointed and your faith in God is shattered.

Same with the Big Bang. What happens if science proves it. Then what happens to your faith?

Believe in God all you want, thats great, heck I wanna believe myself. But don't go off taking fairy tales and allegories from your book and say its facts.

The progress of man is greatest when we questioned the stories in the book. If we said God made man out of clay we would never have come up with all the medicines we have. If we say God made the Earth and everything surronded in orbit, we never would have seen the sun in the center of the solar system. Galileos faith in God wasnt shattered, and if Darwin was religious, wonderful for him.

The thing is... you take risks in even beleiving in science. For example people were so sure at one time that the earth was flat.
Books aren't flawed... people are flawed. That means there is a possibity that books have been translated incorrectly (such as the bible which has been translated multiple times). But that goes for science as well. Every single thing we perceive in this world could be perceived incorrectly... the data we record, even the things we see could be flawed. How do you know that what you are looking at is what it seems? If you have seen A Beautiful Mind starring Russel Crow it might help illustrate.

Now I agree with you on the fact that alot of people take what they read in religous text to be fact because it's "true religion". Religous texts are meant to be interptreted. if you read the bible or any other religous text you can actually find that it applies to modern problems and there are also scientific explanations for pretty much everything.

Now my beef with religion.. I am religous, however if religion and god fail in being real they don't fail in giving people purpose in their life. For the most part, religion urges people to do good. Christianity upholds values and supports the law. It is here that we come back to the fact that humans are flawed. Religion is like communism in that it is ideally perfect. It is the flaws of the human that cause it to fail. People take religion too far. for example the Holy wars, suicide bombings.. the beleif in "fairy tales". When a religion is looked down upon for the most part they have had unfair representation by someone who took it too far or something to that effect.

I have two conclusions. First, humans only have religion because they want there to be more, they want to have purpose, they want to feel needed and have something to turn to when there is nothing else. That is why so many people beleive so strongly in multiple religions. If there was one true religion then why would everybody beleive theirs is the one.

Second, and the one in which I beleive, God exists, he is kind, and he cares. I also love science. i beleive that God has accomplished everythimg through it. Science should not replace God. It is part of him. I do belong to a specific beleif, and I beleive it is the true church. Now i am not ignorant towards other religions. I have learned that you need faith.. people of science will often discredit faith. But won't one scientist need "faith" and believe that the scientists and researchers who came before him weren't BSing all their findings and that their textbooks in Grad school weren't mistranslated? People are flawed. God is not.

I agree with your reasons because the few religious scientists I know have a concept of God that transcends the theology-demeaning concepts of primitive creation myths and anti-intellectualism. The fact that they know He will never reveal Himself trivially in their work lends their reverence an emotional depth that even a cynical non-believer (moi!) must respect. These good people seem to have a religion of their own, where intelligence, and the awe the universe inspires, suffice to prove a God. I'm not of their school, but I have no problem at all sharing my world with them.

PS Darwin gave up religion, and it itself it proves nothing.

ASKER: "The progress of man is greatest when we questioned the stories in the book."

The regression of man is caused by rejecting God and the truth of his written word.

Science is merely an observation and study of things that EXIST...God's handiwork. The only reason we have come up with medicines and observation equipment with which to observe God's handiwork is that grey matter God also designed so we could do exactly what we have done.

excellent (um) question. someone /should/ believe in G*d if that belief brings them some measure of comfort. If they aren't sure whether that belief is comforting, they can try believing there is no G*d, and see if that works better. that is the thing about "beliefs;" you can have them or not.

for my own part, i don't think there is any reason to believe biblical stories that have been disproven scientifically (four legged insects, terra-centric universe, etc.), but there is more in those stories than disproven science, so read 'em if you like.

some will tell you that the belief G*d procreated through a virgin so she could bear the messiah who then atoned for the sin of humanity through his own death is necessary to ensure a rewarding afterlife. frankly, i think this is a load of crap, for it punishes millions of good people. the dali lama has a seat reserved for him next to gandhi in hell? puh-lease. from where i sit, the belief that people /lacking/ this belief should be saved from their own wrongheadedness leads to annoying prosletyzing. if it is true and those /are/ the people that will get the promised reward, at least i won't have to endure their self-righteousness for all eternity.

do you think gandhi is any good at cribbage?

Are you asking a question or dictating a theorem in philosohpy or whatever? You ask why should someone believe in God. Answer: Because it's the very best investment anybody can make anywhere at anytime. What more do you want? God Bless you.

I see your point; and if it made sense to me then I suppose I could believe. All I know is, I haven't believed for many years and I'm not sure I ever really did, and none of the arguments I've heard have persuaded me to change my mind.

"Here I stand. I cannot do otherwise." Martin Luther meant that if he was wrong then he was wrong, but until that could be proved then he had to go with his own understanding.

I believe that god is a figment of man's imagination! man was grasping to understand the universe and it's laws. there were so many things he could not explain that he had to invent something to explain things. if you do something wrong, you know it inside. you dont need some earthly person telling you and somebody making up laws that we are to abide by. dont worry about religion or a god. just lead a good life. treat everybody decently, do not lie, steal, cheat. be a good person.

Because God said He would write it upon our hearts, But many can't read what it says in their heart. They continually struggle with their own inner being, always searching, ever wondering, until God steps in, and ends their search. We can do nothing without God, even believe.

I agree. If you want to believe, if you can do it with honesty, then that's fine. Maybe you've had an experience that assures you there is a god. For the rest of us, though, don't expect us to believe what you do.
