Ask college kids. If he lives in a dorm, shower shoes are a must, a shower caddy, laundry bag, foods that can be eaten on the go and don't spoil quickly and can be carried in a back pack. CDs and magazines are always nice.

Small items since dorm rooms are limited and usually shared.

Nothing flammable. No candles.

For female: Bath essentials

Unisex: the Itty-Bitty Book Light
A few of those highlighter pens that have more than one color ( usually square or triangle shaped. )

Bookmarks that are like paperclips instead of a piece of cardboard.

A portable desk set. It's like a leather bound zippered case that has a mini stapler, mini stapler remover, 6 inch ruler, etc.

Whatever you know about that person can be helpful...
magazine, extra money, movie gift certificate, candy, underwear, laundry detergent, mouthwash, batteries, copy of their home newspaper, photos, personal letter from family/friends, pens, paper....and so on.

how hard could it be to make one???? seems much mor personal that you pick the items. than let some unkown person or comapny guess at what you friend likes or needs!
