I seriously disagree! I ended up with a Buddha belly in high school, got motivated and freaked out about it, and did 300 crunches, 3 times a day for 2 months. I knew 6 different types of crunches from PE class, and did 50 reps of each. Once right when I woke up, once right before dinner (which is earlier in the day for me than most), and once right before I went to bed. Let me tell you, I was pretty hot afterwards, I had the whole Gwen Stefani toned abs thing going on, and was bikini ready at the beginning of bikini season!

Well, I think it is pointless. Your torso muscles, back and abdominal, work isometrically
to support your body vertically.

So crunches are better, holding each crunch a few seconds. A few reps are all that's needed. then go on to some leg-lifts, one legged and then both legs at once. Then do some twisting motions to get the obliques.

One of those wheels with two handbars that your hold and roll out in front of you is great for the entire torso. You want to get to what is called the Psiops muscle, deep in the central belly. Having sex on top in the missionary position is also about the best thing for your abs.

Spending too much time on just one maneuver is unnatural and inefficient. General aerobics will burn fat from the belly.

Or best yet, take up bellydancing.
That way you can have some fun instead of just grunting on the floor.

The answer is "it depends". How well do you know HOW to do sit ups? Can you do crunches? I can tell you that the law of diminishing marginal returns tells us that you'll get a smaller "quantitify of fitness" per sit up the more one does. So if you mean, do 25 make quantitative and qualitative sense, then that's a reaonable number. (25). Best to spread into 10/15 morn/afternoon. Btw, if you're doing situps because you'd like a 6-pack, you're wasting your time a bit. One has to lose subcutaneious fat, body fat, to have abs that "show". We're a weird cross animal. Like sea mammals, we keep warm with fast, not fur. But we are a land animal, all of the other land mammals have FUR. So it is healthy to have some fat on you anyway. You're "supposed to". If you have fur, then you have trouble even storing fat (tho' there're enough fat domesticated animals alright.) Read "The Scars of Evolution". Forgot author. Thin, good read. And eye-opening! (Elaine Morgan??)

It depends what you are trying to accomplish. I think a lot of people believe that by focusing on one part of their body they can really make that section look good/in shape. Untrue. If you are trying to loose weight because you are displeased with your abdomen, I do not recommend too many sit ups. To lose weight, you must control your diet. You must do cardio frequently. Lifting weights will help you change your body as well. You must supplement well. Doing 50 reps on abs will work for you if you have low body fat and are trying to get a six pack. I think this is why a lot of people give up on working out. You must do a total body workout. Lift weights, do cardio, and eat right. I guarantee if you follow a strict program you will get the abs you want in three months.

It depends on what you are trying to achieve. If you are looking for a 6-pack, you need a combination of diet and excercise. You can do 1,000 situps and it won't do you any good if you have too much fat around the muscle.

no - it not pointless but it does depend what you are training for

instead of doing more situps how about adding more different exercises

add in crunches, bent leg raises, hipthrusts etc
