what came first, the egg or the chicken?

I think it was the egg because, to be a chicken it had to be born from a chicken egg. But what laid that egg wasn't quite a chicken yet. Coming down from the evolutionary chain something but not a chicken laid that egg. So the chicken came after the egg. But it's parents weren't chickens. But perhaps something similar.

the chicken. cuz if god made an egg, there would be no mother chicken to hatch it.
and the second answer: if u r a scientist, then the chicken evolved from a chicken-like ancestor.

I read not long ago in the newspaper that it was in fact the egg that came first.
