Just because someone doesn't have a degree in english has no reflection on their intelligence. I agree, that some of it is pretty bad out there. But instead of calling them on it........... why not just answer the question?? A lot of people due to circumstances did not have the oppertunity to futher their education. Hell I make more money than most of you college grads anyway.

If the person is not familiar with writing in English, then of course that person can be excused for making grammatical errors.

But normally, it is obvious based on the question that the person is American and lives at least a middle class lifestyle, yet makes little effort to compose a decent sentence. Those persons should make the effort to show others how to write. Are we not proud of our usage of language which is a reflection of our society?

I commend persons like yourself who do not have a college education, but nevertheless write beautiful sentences. It shows that you care.

I'm so sorry if anyone hurt your feelings or if you witnessed anyone else's feelings being hurt. However, proper grammar comes with a mere high school education, not with an English degree. I realise that not all people have had the same life and benefits, so I think it not nice to make fun of someone who does not know. But grammar is not complicated; it follows certain rules, which can be stated in one simple book. So when someone is writing a question consisting of one simple sentence, they could try to look it up so that it is as perfect as they are able to make it, even if they have to change the form of the sentence somewhat. If a person keeps writing incorrectly, they are reinforcing within themselves faulty English. Some mistakes are from very negligent spelling and typing, which is very annoying to read, and these types of errors are the simplest to correct; give the reader some consideration and check the spelling. A lot of the persons are from different countries where English is not their native tongue; and I hope that we are all here tolerant of them, for I personally would not want to give up their presence and contribution to Yahoo! Answers just so that we clean up the grammar.

Ignorance is not bliss. I'm probably much older than you,so let me explain something.People are judged by not just appearances, but by how they speak, how they communicate, how they perform their jobs. It is not snooty to expect EXCELLENCE. Good spelling and good grammar are learned in Elementary School;I know because I taught it for 20+ years. You do not have to have a college diploma to be able to spell well and use proper language. People with poor communications skills are not going to be hired for very good positions. Businesses are sending recently-hired employees back to school to improve their writing skills but even then, some of these people are let go because they can not perform their jobs adequately.

The world would be better served if people would just get smart and aim high, work hard, seek wisdom, value truth, strive for excellence.

A book was published several years ago about the dumbing down of America. It's called BAD and it's by Paul Fussell.Sadly,he has identified exactly what is wrong with having low expectations.

Hi,

Many feel that asking a question with poor grammar, or giving an answer in the same way, reflects a lack of care on the part of the writer. Thus, people can feel that it is rude, and find it upsetting. If you care enough to write an answer or question, try to take the time to use propper English; it shows manners, makes your answer look more creditable, and makes reading the website nicer for everyone.

Doors are slammed on many who speak poorly. Of course, a bad mouth comedian or a dumb sports figure can speak like a sailor out of a Herman Melville novel, and make a lot of money. Everyone can further his education. Going to the library might be a start. I could care less how much you make. I don't judge people on their intellectual poverty.

Because it's hard to read a question when the words are all spelled wrong. Some people may not have had the "opportunity" to further their education, but they sure as hell should be capable enough to click on "Check spelling"!

Because the writing on this forum goes way beyond "not being an english major." Language is about communication, and it's rude to write in the ridiculous, childish shorthand used by so many on the internet now. Lines like

R U happy?

It's just laziness. Plus, you don't have to be an English major to communicate clearly. You just need to be literate.

I think it's gotten ridiculous how there are so many people who keep complaining about people not using proper grammar and correct spelling. If they don't like it and can't handle it, they need to get off of this site. It's true that there are a lot of grammar and spelling errors, but who cares? Life is too short to get so upset about something so minor.

the only time i'll play grammar/spelling cop is when the person asking the question is boasting of their own intelligence, or if they are carping on someone else's poor spelling/grammar while displaying their own need for improvement.

this is more because i love irony than i care if people know how to communicate properly.

Jamie because of the fact that is how i'm used to seeing it and that is hassle-free. Rhys besides because of the fact that is how that is initially spelled and it appears that evidently extra constructive than Reiss and Reece. additionally Reiss could be mispronounced as Rice, so as that is yet another excuse to no longer %. that spelling.
