What kind of cancer did he have to start with? There are people nowadays living with cancer. My father's friend Tony is an example. Tony was diagnosed with 6 months to live, terminal cancer. He pushed for chemo anyhow and is still here 8 years later and the cancer spread to the colon and pancreas and started in the lung. He has to be on maintenance chemo every 4 months to control it but he is living with cancer like people live with any illness. Don't give up hope. Depending where the cancer is, part of the liver if it's in the left lobe can be removed and he can still function with part of his liver. He could also be eligible if push came to shove for a transplant from a relative.

Dear hon, I lost my whole family to cancer (4). Its just me left but I just would like to tell you a few things. (I had to learn the hard way)
first off, you said "has spread"...where does he have it also?
and of course your second question hon is "how long does he have", well no one knows that hon, no one. Look at it like this, please all of yall keep together and support him every way you can. If he decides to take Chemo then it might be ok. Its so hard to say. Without knowing more i just cant do to much commenting on my opinion. My knowledge is strictly from experience and i sure went through it. I'm only 44.
If yall got the answer from the doctors that "its not as bad as they anticipated", well that is a wonderful hope there.! go with that and just hang together and show the love and support.
As far as the liver goes, i do think now a days they do have lots of medical things for that, so you will be happy to know.
Thank you
I sure will say a prayer for yall.

My grandmother died from liver cancer and she survived for a year. The liver and lungs are deathly places to have cancer. Don't want to alarm you however there is not much help for people that have liver cancer. they have several new drugs but that just prolongs a life just a little longer...no cure or chance it won't spread. I'm not sure about giving a part of someone elses liver. He may not qualify for that. Tell your boyfriend to enjoy the time he has with his father and try to make as many memories as possible.....peace

It really depends on age and health factors besides God. Pray and Pray for the Cancer to leave the body. If the doctors hasn't stated his length of life than don't worry about it. Enjoy what you have now and don't marry just to please his dad. Enjoy his life as if it was your last. No one knows. Just don't make it so obvious and make him more scared which could make the liver get weaker. Keep his heath up and don't have him stress at all. It could be one year or 6 hrs maybe 6 secs from the moment you read these posts. Life is too short to dwell of the what "ifs" which for me is hard to do. Easier said than done. Most can handle the news. Most can survive. Just be upbeat and happy all the time when you're around him. God bless you and give you guidance and strenght to pull through.

Sorry to hear your bad news, great that it's treatable. Every case is different, though. Chemo is very tough to go through, but it can cure or even add years to your life.
The Mayo clinic does those kind of transplants - but there are also lots of reasons why they might not be compatible.
And nobody can ask to donate except the donor!
Also, your friend's father may not be strong enough to undergo surgery; chemo might be his best hope.
Your b/f should be asking his doctors these q's. Or asking his father! Doctors are very honest with cancer patients.

Hi Maryanne,
Being a cancer survivor and having been told by my doctors at various stages and survivived it. I always look at things in a positive manner and thats what you must encourage your dad to do, The liver is not replacabe but it can work even on small sizes and rest lost due cancer via surgery to remove the infected area. All I can say is that he nust begin to look at life in another way and you will see the difference. You can also read my story on a website created by a doctor in the UK. Its called:
www.rdoc.org.uk. Once you have entered the site look at the right side of the stories and you'll find mine.
With warm regards to his dad and you, both

not enough specific info to give you anything approaching an accurate answer
where was the primary cancer? any lymph nodes involved? what type cancer was the primary location? what stage was his father told the cancer was? what other treatments prior to the chemo?
generally speaking, when a cancer spreads to the liver it is still treatable but only rarely will the person have a good long term prognosis.
