When bombs drop - like the 500 lb one that dropped on al-Zarqawi - is there a fire explosion or is it just like a really heavy steel ball dropping on top of a building?

It really depends on what we are trying to do. The bombs used on Zirquati were 500 pound bombs with explosive filler.

One innovation that was developed in Iraq is the use of the 2000 pound 'inert' bomb. This is a bomb where the explosive filling has been replaced by concrete. When this hits an unreinforced masonry structure it will typically collapse.

it is a fireball explosion usually but there are lots of nasty things that can happen shrapnel, High concussion blast waves fire storms etc etc it really depends on what ordinance was used.
I believe the one that killed the sob in question was high explosive rounds.

No, there is usually not a lot of fire unless what it hit blew! Initial blast but it isn't napalm!

It explodes upon impact and then whatever it blows up is destroyed. So the former in your question not the latter.
