Don't you hate those unreal answers! Bunch of schmucks here!
Dogs react to different calls differently. If you raise your voice, some will bow their heads. When they feel alert, they tilt their heads. I think it's because their hearing is so strong that they raise their good ear to hear your command, when they plan to obey it. Like when they're afraid, the lower their head to protect their ears from the loudness of your voice.
Sorry if that doesn't make sense. It's a little hard to explain, but I tried!

I was under the understanding that they do it because when they tilt their heads a different way, their ears will catch sound more effectively.
My dog only does it when he can't see the source of the noise, or when he is confused about the command he is given.

Lol, that's a funny question! I had never thought about that one, I guess it's a way to say that they understand that you are calling them. It's sooo cute when you call them and they tilt their head and point their ears!! Member that dogs are as smart as human, what they are missing is verbal speech, so they use body language.

Well you have to remember they hear a lot better than we do, so when you yell there name it might surprise them or something. Or maybe their ears are like antennas and they have to tilt their head to get better reception!

i really don't know, but i can say i love it when they do it. i used to have a rottie that would do this and we realized that she tilted her head whenever we said a word she knew. so we entertained ourselves by saying sentences like "dante outside dinner toy potty car ball sit bed?" and her head would just bob back and forth, we loved it. she was an awesome dog.

the head tilt usually means they don't understand what you're saying, try changing you're tone when you talk to them. My chihuahua mix does that when i talk baby talk to her. I know she doesn't get what im saying but i do it anyways because it's adorable!!!

Two things, it helps them hear better and to get a better idea of the direction that the sound came from.

I believe its their way of responding...letting you know they hear you. They can not say "What?" or "Shut up" so they tilt their head!
