Yes, the question is lame but she's 12 and asks a lot of questions like this. I figured someone might have an answer for her once in a while instead of my usual "I don't know".

I believe and this is only my thought no scientific proof, but I think that is where the stem forms the blossom that it grows from.

If you find out for sure let me know. :)

I agree, I'm almost positive it's where the stem forms. We used to grow strawberries, so that would be my best guess.
