The Dhammapada is quite good, easy and simple and poetic. But if you want hard core stuff yet not too HEAVY i'd say the Tibetan Book Of Living And Dying by Sogyal Rinpoche(a great book which i started off as a Western philosophy degree student into my life in Buddhism)

You should try Suzuki's Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind. It is a great introductory text, however is very Zen which may not be what you are looking for. Can also find alot online.

There's a book called "Living Buddha, Living Christ." I can't remember the author but he has several books.
