Tell him to keep his head up and always know what is going on around him. If he keeps his head down he will miss something and maybe get hurt. I will tell you what my mother told me before I deployed at the age of 31 to OIF I. She said "I want you to be safe but I also want you to be brutal."

You sound like a "great" Mom, and I'm sure your son feels the same.
If you have a "sit down" before your son embarks on his "own" life, tell him how you felt the day he was born. Tell him everything you can remember, no matter how minor. Speak about the highlights of his growing up and how you "felt" during these times. You will think of other things as you talk, I'm certain. What's the purpose of this? When you tell him how much you love him he will understand it's more than just a word.
May the Good Lord give you trust and peace, Mom.

You don't have to write a speech, just him knowing that you are proud of him and are supporting him and his unit is more than enough. And if you haven't gotten his mailing address already I would and start sending him books, DVD's, food, get him a suscription to his favorite magazine (I'm sure is "Maxim" "Stuff" or "FHM") things like that will help his moral "over there" and let him know that you are thinking of him. This is coming from a currently deployed soldier.

You don't have to do anything to leave a lasting impression. You're his mother.
Maybe this will console you somewhat:
I read something a while back about a mother in your situation, and she talked to her son about her feelings. I just remember at the end of it, she either told him or asked him how she was going to be able to take care of him. He responded by telling her it's his turn to take care of her. I thought that was very powerful. Whether your son says that to you or not, that is what he's doing.

Tell him he is a hero, and you are proud of him, and you know his Father and Grandfather would be proud of him.
Tell him he is very brave and strong to be putting his butt where so many others only put their mouths!
Tell him you are honored to have raised such a brave son, who is willing to sacrifice months of his life to defend our country, and our way of life.
Tell him that you love him, and you always will.

When I was in the Navy, my mom never ended a conversation without telling me she loved me and she was proud of me. Believe me, it's something you can take with you.
