2000 Ford Explorer XLS-driving down the road and smoke started came from steering column where hazard light switch is. Anyone know if this is a major problem? What should be done?

I definitely agree with both the above responses. There is a short circuit in the wiring or ignition switch. Do not drive the vehicle until it is repaired! If it still starts and runs, and you drive it, you risk the chance of a fire! Also, call your local dealer (have the serial or VIN number available) I think there may be a Factory Recall for this condition. If there is not a recall, have the vehicle towed to your mechanic for repair.

I agree with everyone it's a short of some dort and recommend bringing to a mechanic who is willing to do electrical or the dealer to find out....

It's a major problem if you don't get it found and fixed, but there are a few things electrical in the area other than just the ignition switch everyone has gone after... the turn signal switch which controls the wipers, turn signals, and headlights among other things is about where the smoke started coming from and would probably be what I'd look at first

Most likely the harness for the multifuntion swith in the steering column. Common on this model and year. Usually the pins pull out of the electrical plug

Get this checked right away, Seems like your ignition switch is burning and it will continue to trace back through the wiring harness.
