Salam,
That is 'hello' although it is derived from arabic and the original persian is 'dorud'.
Salam aqa - hello sir, to a man you don't know
sobh bekhyer - good morning
salam frechta jan - 'hello dear frechta' to a friend called frechta - jan is a term of endearment

PS. khoda hafez is 'goodbye'

nowadays, it's salam [first 'a' short (as in cat) and second one long 'a' (as in car)].
Even though generally used as a greeting and as hello in Persian, it is really a arabic word.
If you're looking for the true Persian word, it's "doroud". No longer really used in that sense in Persian.
