well its freedom of speech, but really.. I agree with him. If we went another country to live, we would be treated badly if all we new was English and not their native language.

People may be surprised on my answer to this, but guess what - he's in America. He is a business owner and I think he has the right to demand that of his customers. There's another article on Yahoo about the same guy, and that article also says that his staff actually DOESN'T turn people away for not speaking English - that they'll coach the person through the entire ordering process if needed. It's an interesting case. One of the Latino groups in his area actually wants to send people in ordering in Spanish and then persue legal action if he refuses them. I wonder if they have grounds.

Oddly, what DOES bother me about it is that he also refuses to serve people who "can't speak at all". So...if I have a disability and can't speak, I can't get a cheesesteak? What if I can communicate it by writing it down or pointing? Sorry, buddy, but the disabled ARE protected from your discrimination.

Do you know what is a very relevant factor why many Americans are considered to be so closed-minded? Because you don't NEED to care for other people's lifestyles. So, all many Americans know is themselves, or actually not even that, but only those people who live closest. I've read that only 25% of all Americans can locate New York on a map! It's inconceivable anywhere else that three out of four people don't know where the most important city in their own country lies!

Of course there are open-minded people in the USA, and closed-minded people everywhere else. But since most other people in the rest of Occident are under the strong influence of foreign cultures (especially yours), we get to learn about other people's lifestyles, and to compare them to ours. Opening your mind to other people's ways of living (including their language) is a way to improve yourself as a human being. So, sorry. But I DISagree with this guy 100%.

I also agree with him, if immigrants are going to come to America where we speak English then they should at least take the time to learn some English and prove they deserve to be here. I just think it is so sad when there is a family of Spanish speaking people and their eight year old kid has to translate everything for them. What are they teaching there kids? Its ok that we make you learn the language, but we are too good to change our ways. Even though I agree with his point, I don't think he needs to go around with a PA system and scold the people who hire immigrants. To all their own. If people want to give immigrants a job so they can feed their family then fine that is there prerogative, we shouldn't go out of our way to scold them. They have their own beliefs and so do we.

What aggravates me about people like this guy is that they are so closed minded. I agree that he needs to be able to understand what his customers are ordering. However, it makes me angry that he is so egotistical about it. He thinks these people are coming into HIS neighborhood and trying to convert him to their ethnicity and that isnt the case! They are here trying to have a better life for themselves and their family. I think we should give them a freaking break!!!

I disagree with him. One of the central tenants of modern marketing involves catering to the customer needs. By excluding a segment of the population, he is reducing his customer base. In effect, he is choosing to reduce his business. What's worse, he's giving his competition a golden opportunity to take business away, by their catering to the segment he's excluding. That's just poor business on his part.

He may be making a political statement, but he isn't a politician. He's a sandwich maker. His actions show he is out of his depth, out of his field, and may be out of business.

Great idea! If they can't tell you what they want, how do you know if you're getting it right?
