Homosexuality used to be classified as a disorder, because it was only ever studied in people who had other mental health disorders, and also because a homophobic society ensured that homosexuality was supressed from view.

In 1973, the American Psychological Association removed homosexuality from its list of mental disorders (the DSM) and replaced it with ego dystonic homosexuality (where a person is at odds with their orientation). Eventually, this was removed on the grounds that nearly all homosexuals go through this ego dystonic phase as part of coming to terms with their orientation.

Research conducted in the past 35 years has suggested that homosexuality on its own isn't associated with mental disorders. Mental disorders in homosexuals are due to other factors, and is not part of homosexuality itself.

Nowadays, the main psychological organisations take the view that homosexuality isn't an illness/disorder and doesn't need to be changed. Instead, psychotherapy concentrates on the issues which cause anxiety in the homosexual.

I personally believe that there are people who exhibit homosexual traits, but really aren't homosexual. This explains why some people appear to "respond" to reparative therapy.

Also, I believe that sexual orientation isn't fixed. It can vary throughout a persons lifetime, and bisexuals usually report this. It still doesn't classify homosexuality is a disorder, and a change can happen without having any kind of therapy.

The existence of bisexuality in its various degrees suggest that sexual orientation is a continuum rather than two/three exclusive categories.

It isn't a mental disorder. In fact, it isn't really a disorder at all. If we were to call homosexuality a mental disorder, then heterosexuality would also be classed as a mental disorder. You may think "well no, because it's normal", but just because the majority, as am I, are heterosexual doesn't make it normal, it's like saying that right-handedness is normal, but it's not; it's just one of two things, like a or b.
They are the same, but neither are mental disorders.

It used to be listed in the DSM (The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) as a mental disorder I believe that was change in the early 90's (don't quote me) but know it is no longer looked at as a disorder.

Hmmm. Is being left handed a disorder or a difference. And of course there's the nature versus nurture debate.

Its a mental difference i suppose.

Got to reply to those statistics above.

Where are the statistics for heterosexuals? How many women have swallowed semen? How many heterosexual couples have tried fisting? Quite a lot. How many heterosexual couples have tried anal sex? Quite a lot.

It not what you do its how safe you are when you do it. Drinking urine sounds horrible, but is that really a problem? And again, how many heterosexual couples have dont that. I've certainly heard of it.

You just want to paint the icky side, disgust us into agreeing, but its the way people treat each other that counts.

No, we are not animals, we are free to open our minds, experiment and live life to its fullest.

There is no damage that can be done with homosexuals that can't be done with hetorsexuals.

Except a beating from biggots.

No it's not. You just see who you love during lifetime and decide wether you want to be straight or gay. You are not born with it and it cannot be taught. In ancient Greece homosexuality was a higher form of love than heterosexuality among intelectuals. It also appears among animals, therefore it can't be disorder. It's just a prejudice. If you love someone it is worth to go to hell for them no matter what's their gender because love is always sacred and homosexuality is only love, so quit with Jesus. He's been dead for about 1970 years anyways.

make love not war

READ THIS AND MAKE UP YOUR OWN MIND...

The homosexual lifestyle is an extremely dangerous one. According to numerous studies, many of which have been commissioned by homosexual publications; 20% of homosexuals report of participating in sadomasochism where their partner is hurt, scratched, bruised and/or bloodied. 41% of male homosexuals and 8% of lesbians report, "fisting"; where the arm is inserted up the rectum of one's partner. Over 90% of male homosexuals participate in the insertion of the penis into the rectum of their sexual partner's.
This practice carries great risk for both participants. The rectum was not created to withstand this abuse. Fecal matter can enter through the urethra, and sperm breaks through the single layer of the columnar epithelium of the rectum, causing massive immunological disruptions in the blood system, making the person at much greater risk for infection. It's no wonder that homosexuals are 245% more apt to report 2 or more sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) at a time, than heterosexuals.
The consequences of this behavior are magnified when one looks at the number of partners the average homosexual has in his/her lifetime. Most homosexual sex is performed with strangers. 70% admitting to having sex only once with over half of their partners. The average Homosexual has had 300 to 500 partners during a lifetime. 28% have performed sodomy on over 1000 partners. Only 2% have had monogamous relationships, and those are defined as lasting anywhere between 9 and 60 months.
Of these monogamous relationships;
5% drank urine,
7% incorporated fisting,
33% ingested feces,
53% swallowed semen.

Dear Spiderman, hi! I don't view homosexuality as a disorder. Gender is socially, not biologically constructed. This means that though we are born male or female(this is our sex) we cannot expect our gender to be identified with the former. In other words, one's sex maybe male but his gender maybe female: his feminine qualities may appear to exceed the masculine ones. For example, his sensitivity may prevail over his physical strength. Personally, I think it's nice to meet once in a while a man sympathetic to other people's needs instead of the typical matcho man whose only interest is how to work out. Besides, it's not, in my opinion, the combination boy-girl that makes a relationship normal: it's how much and how deeply you care for the person you share your life with. I know many heterosexual couples whose relationship is far from normal: alienation, indifference, not to mention the more serious cases (mental and physical abuse). Finally, who dares think of himself as wise enough to decide what is normal and what is not? If you ask me,it is completely irrational to watch people die of AIDS in Africa while we all know that there are more than enough money to be saved! However, some people think it is quite logical to leave a child die of starvation if you feel that you must have that gorgeous Donna Kar... dress. But, as you see the majority regards it as completely rational to be tolerating it for years...

No, it's a physical disorder - i.e. a gene mutation. Animals can get the same mutation. Some people get down's syndrome, some people are homosexual - either way, it's a malfunction of the normal system. So, it's a disability in a way.

No, if it was anti depressants could control it, but they can't.

If it was a "choice" why would people choose something that could cause them harm, abuse or just misunderstanding, that isn't logical.

It is a personal preference, like how some men like thin women and some like curvy etc.

Most people over analyse the whole gay issue, when there IS no issue.
