I suggest you read Honest John's assessment, at:
http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/road_tests/index.htm?id=9
I have an 850 T5, my second, and my sixth Volvo. HJ's assessments are spot in on my experience. In short, there are no major downfalls, at all (unless you often carry five adults). But if that is not your problem, think about the S40, which HJ likes even more: I hired a new one in the US recently - brilliant!

I've never heard of a D5 SE I have a S60 AWD. Car is great drives great in the rain and snow. Never had issues. Tires are pricey but it is the only thing that keeps me from being launched off the road so I don't complain. Radio is great, AC is great. No issues with the seats on long drives. It's easy to keep. I've never been in a wreck in this car but I'm confident I'll end up OK. Can't say that about my last car.
I assume The D5 SE is a Diesel. If so with all Diesels you have to change the fuel filter or it puts out black smoke. Changing the filters is a dirty stinky job. But if that's what floats your boat go for it.
With a Volvo you either like them or you don't there is no in between.

Long drives are hard on the back. Tight back seat. Odd tire size means high cost for replacment and not a lot of choice. Uummmmm, not much else really, I love the car, I bought a new S60 T5 in 2003 and I love it, maintanence cost is on par with other imports but they are very well built and I haven't had any problems with mine so far. I'd suggest getting one.
