The FDA defines a low-calorie food as having no more than 40 calories per serving for most foods, and for meal and main dish products, it has to have no more than 100 calories per 100 g of food. http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/cdrh/cfdocs/cfcfr/CFRSearch.cfm
As far as I can tell, they don't define a high-calorie food, but I have been taught to avoid foods with 200 calories or more per serving if the food doesn't provide 10% DV or more at least two the following: fiber, protein, vitamin A, vitamin C, or iron.
Hope this helps.
*I wrote low-calorie in the second paragraph, too. Oops. Now it's fixed. That should make sense now!

Think about it. If you need only 2000 or so calories a day, and something you are eating is like 500 calories, that's 1/4 of everything you can eat for the day! Pretty high.
Things like fruits and vegetables are things that are good for you and low calorie also.

Calories are unit used to measure how much energy a particular food will allow your body to generate. The kinds of food and drink that contains higher calories than others are those that have high amounts of sugar and/or refined starch (carbohydrates), and high amounts of fats. For example, regular soda, white bread, and fried foods. It does NOT matter whether the food is natural or not. Natural foods such as oranges, pineapple, grapes, grapefruits all have a natural form of sugar call fructose. But if you ate too much of them, the calories adds up. For example, a medium size orange has about 12 grams of sugar (fructose). If you ate 4 oranges you are getting the same amount of sugar in 1 can of regular soda. Same amount of sugar, same amount of calories. That's not to say you should not eat oranges, but that you should not eat that much in a day. Generally, fresh vegetables, wholegrain products and lean meat will have lower calories. But it also depends on how you cook them. If you cook vegetables in cheese sauce, then you will end up with much more calories then if you cook it without the cheese. If you ate a wholegrain toast without butter, it would be lower in calories then with butter.

Take your current weight and times it by 10. That's how much you should eat daily. Keep higher calorie foods (300 or more) for early in the day and smaller food at supper time.
