The number one thing to remember is this:
people like to talk about themselves and they like to know you are paying attention and really listening to them.
Don't just go up and say to a perfect stranger, "What did you do this summer?" because that is too vague. Find something that you obviously have in common with that person (a class, a club, etc.) and start your conversation with a comment about the common topic. Then, use your Listening Skills and pick up clues about the person's other interests that you can ask them about.

Keep in mind that it takes practice for most people to become effective listeners. Watch somebody you know that talks a lot - you can watch their facial expressions and tell that they are thinking up the next thing they are going to say as soon as you take a breath and they are not really listening to what you are saying.

So long from Gadsden!

There are plenty of self-help books that tell you exactly what to say and how to start conversations. (How to win Friends and influence people, How to have confidence and power in dealing with People) Just check the bookstore or online. Also just try starting conversations with what you see. For example, if you are in line and someone is wearing a hat with a baseball team or logo, there is a starter right there! The key is to be confident, smile, and EXPECT the other person to like you. What you say isn't nessesarily important. The body language that is more important. You will do great!
