Yup, can happen. Depends on where the problem is. You know that telephone and internet are different things.. One thing breaks and the other still works. It is only the last bit, you telephone line, where the twain meet. Saves the phonecompany digging a hole for an extra cable and saves you a load of cash to pay for that cable.

Would you ask the same question if your internet did not but the phone did work? (obviously not here because your internet would be down.)

I'm a telephone repairman and I see this happen allot. You say your internet is through the phone line so I assume you have DSL. DSL is pretty resilient, it will continue to work when your phone wiring has problems and you don't have dial tone. Most likely you have a phone or some telephony device that is malfunctioning, and the two wires that make up your phone circuit are shorted together inside that faulty device/phone. In your phone box on the outside of your house you have a place to plug in a phone, if you plug a phone into that jack and have dial tone then you have something faulty in your home, if no dial tone then your local company has a problem with the lines leading up to your house. If it's in your house, (you have dial tone at the phone box outside but not in your house) unplug every device that is connected to your phone lines and then plug them back in one by one until you plug in the device that kills your dial tone.

Since you didn't mention whether you were using dial-up or dsl for your Internet... there are several possibilities. Simplest first: If you are using dsl, the splitter in the local telephone central office is corrupt. you need to contact your dsl provider and request a check. They can run a diagnostic on your dsl line free of charge and direct you from there on what next. They are responsible for the service until the wire "hits your house".
If you are using dial up... try plugging a phone to the jack that your computer is plugged into. Depending on where your computer is in relation to the NID. (the box outside your house where the telephone wires connect) you might just have a broken wire and need to have it repaired..... good luck.

Are you asking us or telling us?

If you have DSL or dial-up, it goes over the phone lines.

If you have a cable modem, it does not go over the phone lines.

Do you have dial-up? That's the one that really ties up your phone lines. If you don't want that to happen, get DSL or cable.

If you have DSL then there's a regular phone signal problem. DSL works on a different frequency than your phone.
