Sophie's Choice was a novel by William Styron, which was later made into a motion picture starring Meryl Streep.

In the story, the main character Sophie has to choose which one of her two children will live and which one will die. It is a choice force upon her by the Nazis. She chooses, and is stricken with a guilt for the lost child that she will never overcome.

So when confronted with a Sophie's Choice, one is confronted with a choice which cannot be avoided, and in which none of the choices results in a good outcome.
