it depends on what time you get up in the morning [no one else thought of that, huh?] my neice and nephew are four and two and they go to bed any time between six thirty and eight, but then again, they're awake by 7 am. if you want to sleep longer, put them to bed later.

7:00 to 7:30.
Your child needs sleep and you need some private time for yourself. I've noticed that when I let the kids stay up later, they're just grumpy. Definitely no later than 8:00 p.m. We usually start the whole process around 6:45 (pajamas, brush teeth, go to the bathroom), then do a 15 minute fun activity (color, card game, puzzle, etc), then read a couple of books. It doesn't matter if he/she goes to sleep right away.

Depends on you and your child. My 3 yr old is a night owl and I relent and let her stay up sometimes to 9 or 10. But if I know I'm going to need her to go to bed early, then I wake her up earlier the day before and don't let her nap that day. By 8 she's ready to go to bed. 8 is about the earlest I can get her to go to bed. My son on the other is a morning person and 8 is the lastest he goes to bed. 5:30 is the earliest he has gone to bed. So you have some leway to be able to pick your childs bed time, by having a set wake up time, and by limitng naps, (both of which my daughter's doctor told me to do to try to get her bed time up). But I have also learned with my children that each child is different and you have to have flexable with the different types. There is no set bed time. Every household is different. You need to look at your and your childs needs and compromise somewhere in the middle.
(when your child starts to get cranky is a very good indictor that it is time to go to bed. )

All of my kids (including a 3 year old boy) go to bed between 9-9:30, with the summer hours and longer days, it's hard for any person to sleep when it's still daylight - If I were to put them to bed any sooner they would stay awake anyways until that time.

The child should get up from an afternoon nap around 3 so after interacting with the family, dinner, bath & storytime they should be ready for bed again aroun 8PM. Children that age usually sleep for 10 hours.
