As a Canadian, I find something noticeable about Americans who go abroad.

The ones who visit Canada and Mexico usually go for financial reason, not to mix in with the people. The same applies to US military stationed elsewhere. These people think like most Americans, believing CNN and FOX, think their country is flawless and that everyone else should be more like them.

The people who visit outside of contiguous countries and are not in the military are the ones who are or become enlightened. It's these people who (try to) understand other people's ideas and opinion, other people's wishes and goals. It's these people who recognize or begin to see the flaws in the US's self-proclaimed image.
