I'm not sure.
On the one hand, it seems taht once you rise to the top of the power structure, and worshipers are praising you and giving you money, you've got to be shrewd enough to realize that there is a good possiblity that it all isn't real. For example I can't for a second imagine that the people at the very top of sceintology don't know it's all a big made-up scam.
But the other school of thought is that if you are doing something immoral, like benefiting from the religious faith of others and their money, your mind can't stand the guilt and a good way to rationalize what you are doing is to truly believe it yourself. Sometimes the cult leader even takes the poison himself!

I don't think so. Some of the TV evangelist I think may be out for the money and fame but I don't think most of the religious leaders in general are. I look that the ones like the Pope, Gordan B Hinkley and Oral Roberts. I think they really do believe what they teach because they continue to do so much good int he word. It is those that just are out for the scam that may be but they are not the really big leaders but the really big show people.

If the pastor of my church was closet atheist and told every one the truth do you know what I'd do differently every sunday?
absolutely nothing.
its all about your connection with god, not every one elses.
you go to church to listen to the word of god being preached. Not the man reciting it. The same goes for these so-called religious leaders. as a christian I have only 2religious leaders: GOD and his son Jesus. all others are my brothers and equals. So if you were implying that god isnt real or its all a hoax. Then you sir, are a closet fool.
