My new puppy wakes up and starts 'crying' for no apparent reason at around 4 AM...is there anything I can do to help her??I took her outside ut then she wouldn't go back to sleep, I took her out of the kennel that she sleeps in and she starts trying to tear up my blanket on my bed...is there anything I can do to help her sleep better??

I tried putting a towel over the crate but that just caused her to whine more...

This is just typical puppy behavior. I have two dogs that did the same thing. As they got older the longer they would sleep through the night. The one thing the help me was that, when I could, I tried to not let them sleep during the day, and to make sure they got a lot of play time and running around the few hours before bed time, this seemed to tire them out more. Puppies just typically have TONS of energy, so they play all the time and take several power naps throughout the day. The older they get the better this becomes, so hang in there it WILL get better. :) Good luck.

Take her outside very quietly and calmly, let her do her business, then put her back in the crate. Limit how much you even talk to her during this time. It's so hard to listen to, but if you let her cry it out a few times, she'll learn that she has to wait to get up. If you pay her the slightest bit of attention while she's crying, she'll learn that crying works and will keep it up.

If you've already been going to her when she cries in her crate, be warned that the first couple times she might cry louder and louder before she gets quiet again. This is called an "extinction burst". Picture someone waiting for the elevator where they hit the button, and the elevator doesn't come. They hit the button again a little harder, and minutes pass. They maybe bang on the button a couple times in a row. If the elevator still doesn't come, they'll eventually walk away. When a behavior doesn't work, we'll all often escalate it briefly before we quit to see if we were really doing it right. "Maybe she doesn't hear me... let me try a little louder!"

Try to keep her up later at night. Play with her a lot just before bedtime so that she is really tired, and make sure she does not eat or drink anything past about 6:00, so she will not have to go out during the night to go potty. Make her last potty break just before bedtime.

When she is in her crate try covering the sides and front with a towel, I did this for my dog as a pup and she slept through the night.. Maybe exercising her will help..

maybe she misses her mommy. when i first got my dog the vet to me to put a hot water balloon next to him and it would help him sleep better because hes used to sleeping right next to his mother. it worked pretty good. all puppies have a chewing stage and thats probably the explaination for why she's tearing the blanket apart.

My puppy did the same thing.I put a stuffed animal that looks like a dog in her kennel with her. She seemed to like it.

Keep a small stuffed animal with you a few days then give it to her it will have your scent on it and it won't feel alone or give it a towel that you use after a shower !
