My father is a recovering alcoholic. He has been sober for three years. When he returned home from treatment, he adjusted well to the changes in his new life being completely sober. However, a few months into his recovery, he began to do things that were completely irrational. Nothing immoral or physically destructive. It's as though his thought process had been damaged. It started out slowly and has progressively gotten worse. His symptoms are similar to those of a child with ADHD. His regular day-to-day decision making is completely irrational. He does not fit the criteria for dimensia. He drank for over 30 yrs. Has anyone ever experienced this with a recovering alcoholic or have any info about it. Could this be damage from the alcoholism, or are these signs of some other type of mental disease. I'm desperate for a method of treatment. If anyone is familiar with this, please help!!!

alcoholism is a family disease, and you need to find the tools to help you cope with his isms..alanon is a great suggestion, and some aa groups have open meetings that you can attend to get some insite on other alcoholics stories. find an aa group in your area and see when they have the open meetings, they will open your eyes, and you are not alone, help yourself first, then you will be able to help him. one day at a time...take it slow, but check out aa, there is so much help for the alcoholic and the family, and its free...just a phone call away, its in the phone book..take care

Try checking out the Al-anon site or a meeting. Al-anon is a support group for friends and family of alcoholics. There is probably a better chance that someone there will relate more to your problem.

Is he talking with his sponser? Is he going to meetings dailey? I have been sober for over 3 years and if I don't go to meeting or talk to my sponser at least every other day I get a little crazy. I went a week one time and I almost drank. Get him back into meetings and with a sponser. My prayers are with you!

He could be setting himself up for a good drunk.

Unfortunately, you are as powerless over his alcoholism as he is. I'd suggest Alanon for you... suggest that he make sure he's going to his meetings as well.
