Was it the man who has manipulated her, or was it in her all along?

of course, it depends on upbringing, self esteem, past relationships, self worth, etc., but some women may really believe that a man loves them if he hits her. she may feel like he doesnt care about breaking the law, and all he cares about is her. so much so that he cant control himself. and to some women, that's love.

others like the abuse because they crave the tension, excitement or the lack of control.

I think it is her parents. The guy figures out that she is always giving in (to be nice) and takes advantage of it.

That's what my wife does with me. she is mentally abusive, not physical, but very controlling.
