There are more commandments than just the famous, big, and important "10 Commandments" that were said to the Jews. There are actually a total of 613 commandments in the old Hebrew testament. And by the way, Jesus wasn't the first one to command that - loving one's neighbor has been an important Jewish principle centuries before his time.
[aspenar74, what you said is not true ("There are ten in Judaism but 11 in Christianity") so don't talk about things you don't know about.]
[shenzoe, what you said is also not true ("there was 15, but old Moses dropped one tablet and broke it, so there is 10 now") There were 2 tablets with 5 commandments on each which Moses broke. Gd gave the same 10 Commandments again later.]

The Nation of Israel had 613 commandments. When Jesus was on earth He was under the law of Moses. Galatians 4:4 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, The Gentiles (all other nations) never was under the law and didn't have the commandments but by nature knew right from wrong. Romans 2:14 For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves: Today we are saved by grace and not by works. Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Ephesians 2:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. Nobody could ever keep the commandments because they wee God's standard. We needed somebody to do that for us. The Lord Jesus Christ was the only man tha ever kept the law. Galatians 3:25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.

That is an interesting question. Technically, there are hundreds of commandments in the Bible. The 10 commandments were just part of a code of laws given to the Isaelites when they came out of the land of Egypt. “The Law,” which included the Ten Commandments along with over 600 other laws and statutes, was given to the Israelites, as the ultimate goal or standard of perfection. This divinely inspired Law contained concepts, laws, and principles of government that were centuries ahead of their time.
When Jesus was on Earth, he summed up the old Law code, which included the Ten Commandments, with these two commands: “You must love God with your whole heart and with your whole soul and with your whole mind” and, “You must love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:37-39) If they followed these two commands, they wouldn't break any of the other laws, because if you love God and your neighbor, you won't kill them, steal from them, desire what they have, ect.
Then Jesus gave a new command at John 13:34,35. "I am giving you a new commandment, that you love one another; just as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love among yourselves" So Christians had to have self-sacrificing love just like Jesus did.

There are a total of twelve. The ten in the Old Testament and two in the New Testament. The two in the New Testament are to love others, but as important to love God. Twelve is a complete number in the Bible. So there are twelve commandments total.

Actually...Jesus calls the old testament the Law and the prophets...so If He is not taking into consideration how many laws or commandments...I might think that it is not just the commandments ....there are precepts laws commandments which total to over like 600+ (mostly laws) which was the reason why it was so hard for them to follow..but the purpose for the law was not to make men right with God but to show men that sin exists..and to show sin is great within men ...but through obedience...you can obtain the presence of God...God bless

Matt 22:37 tells of the 2 greatest commandments. Love God with all your heart and soul and with all your mind and the second to love your neighbor as yourself.
There is a lot covered in those two commands. All 10 are wrapped in the two Jesus gave.
But the purpose of the 10 is another question. Why were they made?!!

The ten commandments were only basic, there are a lot more. I haven't counted them but the answer of 613 may be correct, it is certainly a great number above 10.
The whole thing boils down to two things
1. If you love God you will not want to sin against him in any way, thought or deed, and you should not.
2. If you love God then you will not want to sin against any person on earth, but treat them as you would like to be treated.
*** Those are the two greatest.
