I saw a show about that once on Sci-Fi's SG:SG1 (Stargate).

One character said if we didn't have our Dark Ages, we would probably be around 400 years ahead of our time by now.

More than we can ever imagine!!! Why people thought that you could not have science and religion is beyond me. You would think that religious people of all would know better than any other that of course you can break down God's work into scientific and explain a lot of it. We are talking about an omnipotent being, think of the power and how awesome is it that there have been scientists willing and able to explain some of God's amazing work. Like evolution, it is an amazing work of God to get from that single celled organism to the people we are today, why would people say that that is not God's work, I guess it goes back to holding the bible up as holy as God, which is horrible, and the whole idea of God being a magician instead of an omnipotent being. People can be so ignorant in their beliefs, instead of looking to see how amazing scientists and their work is for this world, they want to just stop it since they can not explain it. It is a horrible thing that religion should try to stop that work. God gave those people those amazing gifts to see and be able to decipher things not everyone can, and than christians (or whatever religion) is going to tell those scientists NOT to use that God given talent. I think it absolutely ridiculous!

Another thought....why did the scientists allow themselves to be stifled? Where did the strength of the church come from? Fears ruled supreme.
