Well, from the USA point of view America is actually two different continents( North and South) and Central America is part of North America. But unlike the US, (most of) the rest of America sees america as one continent only.....and the North, South and Central are simply three differnt regions and Central America belongs..........well......in Central America.
They also make a distintion between.......Centroamerica and America Central (translated they mean the same, Central America) Centroamerica includes only Honduras, Guatemala, EL Salvador, Costa RIca and Nicaragua that are in the mainland.
THe american islands and panama and belize plus Centralamerica make up America Central.

Geographically we are all Americans but most people identify themselves by their country and there is no country named America. That usually refers to the United States of America but North America also has Canada and Mexico and both South and Central Amrerica are made up of several seperate nations.

I believe that technically Central America is considered part of North America just like Mexico is considered part of North America. That's what the books said when I had to teach it.
