If you were shopping for a car and several dealers had the same car, appx. the same mileage and condition, and same asking price, what would make you purchase from one dealer over another?

Well, since I just bought a new car (2006 Mazda MX-5), I've got some experiences...

I went to several dealers in the area. At one, I was ignored for 20 minutes, and even when I told them I wanted a test drive and was ready to buy they acted like they didn't have time for me. Scratch them. At another it was exactly the opposite -- a very pushy salesman attacked me the minute I walked on the lot, wouldn't allow me to look around for a few minutes, and when I told them I wanted to do a test drive and then look at what other dealers had they told me they wouldn't give me a test drive unless I was ready to buy from them RIGHT NOW. Scratch #2.
The dealer I eventually bought from had salesmen that were attentive but not pushy, that would answer my questions but not try to force a sale immediately, that happily gave me a test drive and then told me to look around all I wanted to. When I was ready to buy, the negotiations were short and simple -- they gave me a fair price for my trade-in right off the bat, and offered a darn good price for the new car that I only had to negotiate down once (and then only by a small amount), which they agreed to right away. They understood that as a customer what I wanted was the most important thing, and that making me happy would result in the most sales for their dealership in the long run than trying to be pushy would. I probably could have had the car for the same price at the other dealers, but they were jerks and I didn't want to deal with them.

I would choose the dealer that helped me in the most prompt and courteous manner. If you have to come back for repairs or anything, it's more likely they will take good care of you.
