The St. Vincent DePaul Society will pick up your furniture and give it to a needy family. They have a presence in every reasonable sized metropolitan area in the USA. You can find them in the phone book, or since you are a Yahoo user, why not try the Yahoo Yellow Pages:

Good luck with your search and kudos for your charitable attitiude.

Even in the smaller areas these days there are homeless shelters and organizations like goodwill, dav and salvation army that most times will even pick up donated items. In our area, there are also a number of animal shelters that accept donations for use in their thrift shops to help support the shelters. Check your yellow pages for thrift shops and call around.
